Remote Access (Staff Only)
Kingsmead Remote Access allow staff members to access the network from any location/computer with a network connection provided you meet the Prerequisites. This facility has been introduced to allow members of staff to access MIS data including Pars assessments and complete SEF's and SIPs.
TroubleShooting
- Enabled RemoteDesktop add-on (yellow triangle in bottom left
"Error on Page")
Symptoms: When you click on the 'yes' to agree to the AUP a little yellow error triangle appears in the bottom left of Internet Explorer with the word 'Error on Page'.
When you install some of the Microsoft updates it may disable the Remote Desktop ActiveX Component (this is common when Service Pack 3 is installed), to resolve this you must enable it manually. To enable it please follow these steps:
- Open Internet Explorer 7
- Click 'Tools'
- Click 'Manage Add-ons'
- Click 'Enable/Disbale Add-ons'
- In the list find 'Remote Desktop' or something similar, highlight it
- Click the 'Enable' button
- Click 'Ok'
- Close Internet Explorer, then try again
- Install Remote Desktop ActiveX Component
When you first use this system you may be prompted to install and new ActiveX component, usually indicated by a flashing yellow bar at the top of the screen.
This is perfectly safe and the component can be installed.

Sometimes remote access might fail to load due to some security settings on your computer, we would never suggest reducing the security on your computer however you can allow certain to allows have "special access". This can be done by following these steps (IE7 & 8 Only);
- Select "Tools" from the menu bar
- Select "Internet Options"
- Click on the "Security" tab
- Click the "Trusted Sites" (Should be a green tick)
- Click the "Sites" button
- In the box "Add this website to this zone" enter: "https://athome.kingsmead.staffs.sch.uk"
- Click "Add" then "Close"
- Restart Internet Explorer and try again
- Pars.net fails to load (Error: SIMS.ini)
If you receive the following error:
"PARS requires that there is a SIMS.INI in your windows paths, N:\WINDOWS\"
You will need to loads SIMS.net first, click on Start > all Programs > Sims Applications > Sims.net
Once SIMS has loaded please close it then retry Pars.net

How does it work?
- Open Remote Access (Opens a new window)
- Accept the Certificate (If you are using IE7/8 you may see a warning, press continue)
- Enter your network username/password
- Read and accept the acceptable use policy
- Choose the screen-size that you want (the program automatically detects the best size for your screen)
- Choose if you want to share your drives and clipboard (this allows you to copy documents from you memory stick or My Documents on you're computer at home)
- Enter your username/password at the workstation logon screen
What will I have access to?
This system allows remote access to the network and some of the applications installed including:
- Your home directory (N:\ drive)
- E-Mail (Outlook 2003)
- Microsoft Office 2003 (to use this system you must have a license for Office 2003 or above)
- Pars.net
- Sims.net
- School Improvement Processor (SIP)
- IEP Writer
- Learning Resources and Staff Areas
Prerequisites
- Broadband Connection (2mb/s or higher recommended)
- Microsoft Internet Explorer 6, 7 or 8
- Microsoft 98, 2000, 2003, XP, or Vista
- A licensed copy of Office 2003 Professional or higher installed on your computer
