Key Stage 3  (Programme Of Study)

On entering Kingsmead, pupils study either French or German. They continue with this language for the remainder of Key Stage 3.

In Year 7 pupils are taught in mixed ability tutor groups. In Years 8 and 9 they are taught in ability groups.

Lessons are conducted largely in the target language, so that pupils become accustomed to the language as soon as possible. They are taught to make simple requests and to understand everyday classroom instructions in the foreign language.

The four skills, Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing as well as ICT, are an integral part of language lessons.

Basic dictionary skills are also a part of the course. It is, therefore, essential that a dictionary is purchased for use at school and at home.

Homework is set once a week, on average. It may involve a worksheet, learning a conversation, a list of words or structures.

Pupils follow the Métro coursebooks 1 and 2 in French and in German the Logo 1 and 2coursebooks. Throughout Key Stage 3, pupils cover topics such as the family, school, hobbies, holidays, house and home, the town and environment, illness, travel and transport. There is a formal assessment at the end of each module of work.
