Geography

Key Stage 3  (Programme Of Study)

Geography aims to build upon the pupils' experiences at their primary school. The pupils study Staffordshire and its features and then look at different types of jobs in the United Kingdom. The next unit concentrates on different types of settlement and is followed by an analysis of various earth features that are necessary for our survival. In Geography lessons the pupils will be encouraged to adopt an enquiry approach to their work in order to ask questions about their surroundings. Homework is set regularly and may involve the pupils researching their local area.

In Year 8 the pupils are given the opportunity to develop the skills learned in Year 7 in a world-wide context. The year begins with a study of earthquakes and volcanoes, followed by a unit of work about different countries in various states of development. The year ends with an in-depth study of the tropical rain forests.

The importance of mapping skills is emphasized, with the pupils drawing and interpreting a variety of maps throughout the year. Year 8 is also the time when the pupils begin to apply their geographical skills: they are expected to begin to work on their own initiative a lot more. Once again, an enquiry approach is used and an increased level of homework will be set.

In Year 9 the Geography course begins with a topic about different types of natural hazards. A study of world population growth follows and then environmental issues are investigated in detail, concentrating on the impact of people on our surroundings. The pupils consider how areas of scenic value can be managed. The year ends with a unit about topical sporting events and issues. The pupils are given further opportunities for individual research: whole class debates are a feature of the work. At the end of the year, each pupil is awarded a level of attainment based upon achievement throughout the key stage.

Key Stage 4

Kingsmead is one of 20 schools nationally that are piloting a new type of GCSE. In Year 10 students will study three themes:

Coursework makes up 33% of the assessment in Year 10, with a one-and-a half hour examination for the remainder. The students will be awarded a short course grade by the examination board at the end of the year.
