Key Stage 3 (Programme Of Study)
The Year 7 Science course consists of 12 modules of work based upon the government’s recommended scheme of work for Science. Lessons are taught by two teachers specialising in biological and physical sciences. In lessons pupils are grouped by ability to allow them to progress at the best possible pace. Homework is set once each week and pupils have a revision guide to help them with the work. Achievement against targets is recorded in the pupils’ exercise books and parents are actively encouraged to discuss this with their children.

The Year 9 Science course consists of modules of work based upon the government’s recommended scheme of work for Science. Pupils are taught by specialist teachers in biology, chemistry and physics. The work is differentiated to provide opportunities to extend pupils of all abilities. Each topic of work will finish with a short test. Certificates of Achievement are given out at the end of each term. Homework is set once each week.
After the Year 9 Key Stage 3 tests, the pupils work towards a CREST certificate: this involves working on problem-solving activities, and is awarded by the British Association for the Advancement of Science

Key Stage 4 (Programme Of Study)
Most students at Kingsmead will take Science as a double subject - worth two GCSE grades. Students will work with three different teachers covering the full range of scientific topics in biology, chemistry and physics. Each student is entered for one of two levels:
- Higher: grades A* - D
- Foundation: grades C - G
At the end of Year 10 there is a GCSE examination on the work studied up to then. This is worth 25% of the final mark and it is vital that students sit the paper. Coursework in the three subject areas is completed in Year 10 and contributes 20% of the final mark.
Some students follow the Applied Science course, with its emphasis on how science is used or applied in the world of industry. Pupils complete extended assignments, with most being internally assessed.
Some students follow the Triple Science course, topping up their Science lessons from the Additional Studies allocation. This leads to three GCSE qualifications graded separately. All examinations are taken at the end of Year 11 with this option.
