Design and TechnologyDesign and Technology
Key Stage 3 (Programme Of Study)
Technology is about problem-solving. This involves acquiring skills, such as clear-thinking, organisation and practical ability. All pupils in year seven follow five short courses lasting for about eight weeks each. These will involve working with food, plastics, electronics, textiles and metal. All of the work involves a combination of designing and making, with the pupils' progress being subject to regular teacher assessment. Pupils need to bring basic equipment and they will also need an apron. Homework is an integral part of the work. It will be set regularly and may involve research, strengthening knowledge, completing work or preparing for future lessons.
Pupils build further on the knowledge and skills in Design Technology acquired during Year 7. An additional five course units are followed. This year these are systems and control, food, structures, textiles and wood. All of the work involves a combination of designing and making. Pupils' progress is subject to regular teacher assessment. Homework remains an integral part of the course.
In Year 9 the pupils will bring to a conclusion their Key Stage 3 work in Technology. By the end of the year they will have created a sound platform from which they can tackle their GCSE course in Year 10 with confidence.
Units of work in Year 9 will develop further areas covered previously: resistant materials, food, electronics, graphics and textiles.
Homework remains an integral part of the course. At the end of the year, the Technology Department will decide on the individual's level of attainment in Designing and Making for the end of Key Stage 3 report.

Key Stage 4
Most students will take a GCSE course in one of five options:
- electronic products - food - graphic products
- resistant materials technology - textiles technology
All of the options use a mixture of coursework (60%) and examinations (40%). A limited number of students follow the Vocational GCSE (Double Award) in Engineering. This award is assessed on 66% coursework and 33% terminal examination.
